ΠεριγραφήSeismic Swarm in the Cyclades Islands, Greece (Copernicus 2025-02-06).png
English: Since 27 January 2025, the Cyclades Islands have been struck by more than 1,000 undersea earthquakes, with some exceeding a magnitude of 5.0. The earthquakes’ epicentres have mainly been located between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos. The continuous tremors have prompted thousands to leave Santorini. Approximately 6,000 people have departed using planes, boats, and private yachts. On 3 February, emergency rescue crews were deployed, as authorities advised residents to drain swimming pools and avoid areas prone to rockfalls due to the island's steep cliffs. This data visualisation, generated using data from the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model, geo-localises the seismic swarm. It also includes indicators for the epicentres and magnitudes of the earthquakes which have occurred since the onset of the seismic crisis. Copernicus data is useful for studying the consequences of seismic and volcanic activity, helping to support emergency operations around the globe.
